The Year 5 accelerated group tutorials are specifically designed to not only excel students in their preparation for the English reading and writing proportions of the selective entrance and scholarship exams, but for English mastery. Our curriculum delves into the skill areas of writing, text analysing, reading comprehension, and advanced vocabulary. Through mastering these skills, students acquire not only an astute eye for dissecting texts and uncovering layered meaning, they foster a deep appreciation for English.

Advanced Reading and Comprehension
Our reading comprehension tutorials prepare students to experience the rigours of analysing a text in a test situation like reading a relaxing book at home. Students analyse a vast range of texts in exam conditions to develop the flexibility needed in their comprehension skills on a variation of topics and texts. Whether it's a long story about the ethical dilemmas of climate change or an informative report about the intricacies of the celestial wonders in space, students won’t need to panic. Our classes are specifically designed to focus on improving the students’ comprehension skill sets while nurturing an early passion for English. Tutors aim to maintain a great balance between challenging the students as well as recognising the needs of the students to improve their reading skills.
Students develop and practise a comprehensive range of our practice selective test that exercise the following skills: analysing texts - identifying language techniques, forms and features; understanding the meaning of a wider range of vocabulary in a text to increase their comprehension of unseen text; reading skills to consume large information in the text within a short amount of time; and effectively overcoming trick questions and word manipulations in the multiple choice style questions.
Accelerated Writing
Students learn the three advanced forms of writing required for a placement in a selective school: Imaginative/Narrative, Persuasive/Discussion and Informative.
They are given a variety of writing prompts in exam style prompts, that exercise the limits of their creativity, and fully challenge them to think beyond the norms of traditional writing. We go beyond what is required for examinations to ensure that students build their strong foundation for writing. Detailed feedback is provided on the students’ performances each tutorial, as the tutors thoroughly construct feedback and comment on each student's individual areas for improvement.
But we also understand how even the most skilled writers can be let down by strict and high pressure exam conditions. It’s not about how well a student can write, but how well a student can write on the spot under timed conditions. That’s why our tutors provide realistic exam situation writing activities and give precise stretegic tips on how to stay focused in these conditions and craft a beautiful piece of writing; vivid narratives, persuasive arguments, and enlightening informational pieces.
Refined Vocabulary, Syntax and Grammar
In our extensive vocabulary tutorials, students not only learn a wide range of vocabulary but are accustomed to the full and appropriate usage of each word, that it becomes fully a part of their own dictionary. This is what we call mastery. In order to achieve this word mastery, students participate in a myriad of carefully constructed vocabulary activities that strengthen their judgement of when and where to appropriately use the newly learned words, and to improve their spelling, grammatical and punctuation skills.
Critical Thinking and Exam Skills
As students approach their selective entrance exam, the year 5 accelerated group tutorials are designed to accustom them to the certain skills required to perform at their best within high pressure exam conditions. These are all done through constant practice in exam conditions.
Students in preparation of the exam are taught to: write fast while thinking critically; write an adequate response to an unseen question; think of complex expressions; and vocabulary in a limited amount of time; and think clearly in a high pressure environment with other students.
Targeted Homework and Feedback
Scholardome students will have exclusive access to our Online Learning Portal; a gateway to further enhance their skills through weekly homework beyond the classroom setting. Students are given homework each week to solidify the content that they have learned during class. Homework assignments generally include vocabulary, reading skills and writing practice. The homework is thoroughly marked by the teacher in the next tutorial and detailed feedback is given back to the students to work on for their future tasks and in-class activities.

All Scholardome students actively re-enrolled in our Accelerated English Groups will have access to two complimentary lessons during each holiday which totals up to 8 complimentary weeks of 2-hour lessons throughout the year. These complimentary lessons are to encourage consistent and continuous learning throughout the holidays for all our students.
